Student Rehabilitation Support
Our qualified, and experienced Vision Rehabilitation Team have a thorough understanding of on campus mobility training and aim to support students to get the most out of their time at University or College.
If you are a student with a visual impairment, starting higher education is exciting but can also be quite nerve wracking, especially if your vision impairment means you need support with getting out and about and navigating campus safely.
The Vision Rehabilitation team have built relationships with Higher Education authorities, disability organisations, student organisations and higher education providers and are listed with Student Finance England as a registered Non-Medical Help (NMH) Provider. We can offer mobility services to students in York and surrounding areas who have qualified for support following a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) needs assessment.
This work can be provided in the Yorkshire and Humber area, covering the following postcodes: BD, DN, HG, LS, S, WF and YO.
Our qualified, and experienced Vision Rehabilitation Specialist team have a thorough understanding of on campus mobility training and aim to support students to get the most out of their time at University or College.
We can provide a professional assessment of your campus location and put together a bespoke programme of orientation and mobility training to support you to safely navigate your campus and get to and from your university accommodation. We will support students with all aspects of mobility using a range of techniques, including the use of a long cane and utilisation of any residual vision. Our aim is to enable safe and independent navigation around campus based on individually agreed requirements. Examples of support may include:
- Trips from home to campus via bus
- Orientation, and mobility around Campus
- Training around transport stations – locating information boards
- Problem solving and familiarisation
- Advice and information
- Assistance with applying for further support hours
