Club Wilber Support Volunteer
The Wilberforce Trust is looking for volunteers to support activities for our children’s group, Club Wilber!
Children and young people with sight loss and their families are often faced with additional costs and barriers, making social activities and days out more difficult to access. At The Wilberforce Trust, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to reach their potential regardless of sight loss.
Club Wilber provides accessible, adapted out-of-school activities, events and trips for blind and visually impaired children and young people aged 0 to 25.
As a volunteer, you could help plan and deliver activities, support facilitators during sessions, prepare resources, and provide practical support at events or trips.
By volunteering, you’ll help create opportunities that enhance the confidence, skills and wellbeing of blind and visually impaired children and young people, while making a real difference to their families.
Skills required
- An interest in supporting families of children with visual impairments and a willingness to learn how to work in a way that promotes the safety and wellbeing of our service users
- An open and friendly nature
- Adaptable, reliable and patient
- Good communication skills
- Confidence in approaching and talking to members of the public
- A good sense of humour
Whether you can offer two hours a month or a day each week, every contribution is valued, and we will work around your availability. We simply ask that you are reliable and committed and, if you are unable to attend an activity you have signed up for, that you let us know as soon as possible.
We may ask for your support at additional events or activities, but this is entirely optional.
We require you to provide two references, consent to an enhanced DBS check and complete any training required for the role.
Benefits
- Develop new skills and gain valuable experience volunteering with a local charity.
- Build your knowledge and experience of supporting children and adults living with sensory impairments.
- Receive Sensory Awareness Training from a qualified Vision Rehabilitation Specialist.
- Enjoy ongoing support and guidance from our Volunteer Coordinator throughout your volunteering journey.
Location
The Wilberforce Trust is based at Wilberforce House, The Grove, Dringhouses, York YO24 1AN. However, your volunteering location may vary depending on the activities you choose to support. For example, Club Wilber sessions and fundraising events take place at a variety of venues across York. Full details will be discussed during your induction.
Timeline
Applications are accepted throughout the year and should be made by completing the Volunteer Application Form, available on our website.
Your training and start date will be agreed with The Wilberforce Trust.
If you are a university student interested in using this volunteering opportunity as part of an academic placement, we would love to hear from you. Please bear in mind that your DBS check may take several weeks to be processed, and you will need to complete training before volunteering.
If you have any questions about the role, need help to complete the application form or wish to speak to us about any reasonable adjustments or accessibility requirements, please email volunteering@wilberforcetrust.org.uk or ring us on (01904) 760037.
