Beeping Easter Egg Hunt

The Beeping Easter Egg hunt was the brainchild of our Operations Director Samantha Scholey and launched Club Wilber back in 2019.

The event uses specially made eggs with a sound mechanism inside so they can be found by using hearing rather than sight! Tasty treats were hidden along the way in baskets and hay on little picnic mat stations. At the end of the course the children get to exchange their beeping eggs for a chocolate one, and plenty managed more than one go! Sighted siblings joined in the fun by donning an eye mask, so they too were relying on their hearing to experience this unique, seasonal activity. The egg hunt is one of the biggest on our Club Wilber calendar and has always been hugely popular. On its first year, the event won the Silver Award in the Charity Event category at the Minster FM People’s Choice Awards. This year we were thrilled to be able to host in the grounds of our beautiful new build, Wilberforce House.

For the first time we also held an additional egg hunt for the residents who live in the supported housing apartments within Wilberforce House and, although they weren’t quite as energetic as the children, they collected just as many eggs and went home with plenty of Easter treats!

For both the Club Wilber families, and the residents, the egg hunt isn’t just a chance for a chocolate haul, but also an opportunity to socialise and spend time with people that share experiences. We also opened Weston’s Café for the day, giving everyone the chance to enjoy a hot cross bun and a cornflake nest bun around the activity.

The Easter Egg Hunt is the perfect way to kick off the spring and summer months at The Wilberforce Trust and we cant wait to invite the public here for our Summer Fete in June.

Join our Board of Trustees

This is an exciting time to join a proactive Charity Board of Trustees of one of the area’s most progressive and innovative providers of high-quality support services to visually and hearing- impaired people including those with other disabilities.

The Board of Trustees meets quarterly at the headquarters in Huntington York or by (video conferencing, due to the pandemic) and on average Trustees commit to around 4 hours a month working on committees and working groups with the CEO and Senior Management team. Trustees are volunteers but can receive expenses.

What are we looking for?

We are currently delivering on our 5-year strategy providing a new £8m new build of 30 purpose-built apartments with Living and Learning zone for educational and fun activities including a café and our team of Community assessors and Rehabilitation team.
The Board will be re-visiting its ongoing strategy in 2021 to extend its objectives. At this time, we are looking for Trustees who are interested in helping us to continue to shape our future strategic direction.

We are particularly keen to recruit forward thinking people with a commercial or not for profit background in one or more of the following areas:
• Public Relations
• Fundraising
• Human Resources – Equality and Diversity improvement
• Financial and Business Management
• Lived Experience in the younger community
• Healthcare Compliance (knowledge of social care and CQC)

We would welcome applications from people with the above skills and passion including those with a visual or hearing impairment.

Practical Considerations

The full Board of Trustees meet quarterly usually on Tuesday afternoon/evening. Many of the Trustees join the sub- committees also meeting quarterly one or two weeks prior to the Board Meeting.

Sub committees;
• Finance and Personnel
• Compliance
• Risk and Audit Committee

To request an application pack or to arrange to discuss the process further with the Chief Executive contact p.crowther@wilberforcetrust.org.uk

Insight Magazine – Summer 2020 Edition

The world has been a very strange and scary place since we published the spring edition of our Insight magazine.  Whilst we have adapted and coped (and we’re still coping) with the pandemic situation, many of the workforce have had to be on the frontline each and every day.

Our staff have been brilliant in adapting and have done lots of good fun stuff with many creative activities and lots of video zooming with quizzes and challenges to keep staff and residents all entertained.

I hope you enjoy reading about all the amazing things our Wilberforce people have been getting up to during lockdown and our plans as we slowly release from lockdown.

Thank you to all again and enjoy the read,
Philippa Crowther – CEO
